Days later, as dawn broke and smoke finally cleared, a neighbor sent Megan a grainy but unmistakable photo of Azul, the VW Microbus. There it was, parked amid charred remains, its windows intact, paint unmarred, and body gleaming “bright blue shiny” amid ruin. Volkswagen Steps In: Not Just Restoration, But Revival
Volkswagen of America eventually became interested in the story, and its executives saw Azul's unlikely survival as a metaphor for the brand's storytelling history. On June 2, 2025, Volkswagen announced via a press statement on International VW Bus Day that they would fully restore Azul. Arrangements were made to transport this van to VW’s restoration facility in Oxnard, California.
Initial inspections revealed what the photos couldn’t show: mechanical wear, weakened body components due to age, and soot in places beneath the surface. Even so, the van's structure was still sound, making it a perfect blank slate for change. In fact, the goal of this restoration project is to honor the decades of memories that are stored in Azul's frame and fabric and keep them alive.

The restoration project aims to bring a fully restored vehicle by late 2025, with Volkswagen promising to stay true to the van's original charm.
